When We Would Actually Recommend Spending Less on Window Coverings (And Why)

When homeowners invite us into their homes to discuss new window coverings, they often have an idea of what they want before we even arrive. Sometimes they’ve been browsing online, seen something beautiful in a magazine or visited a showroom and fallen in love with a particular product.

And sometimes, they’ve already convinced themselves that they need the most expensive option.

But after more than 30 years in the window covering business, we’ve learned something: the best window covering isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. It’s the one that makes the most sense for your home, your lifestyle and your plans for the future.

At Aldo’s Shutters, we believe in quality. We believe in buying products that will perform, look beautiful and stand the test of time. But we also believe that spending more money doesn’t automatically mean making a better decision.

In fact, there are plenty of occasions when we’ll actually encourage a customer to spend less.

Here’s why.

1. Your Home May Not Be Your Forever Home

One of the first things we consider during a consultation is how long you plan to stay in your home.

If you’re planning to move in the next three to five years, does it really make sense to invest in the highest-end window coverings throughout the entire house?

Probably not.

Of course, you want your home to look beautiful, feel comfortable and appeal to potential buyers when the time comes to sell. Quality window coverings can certainly help with that. But that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune.

We can often recommend a more economical brand or product that offers excellent performance, attractive fabrics and dependable quality without the premium price tag.

Our goal is to help you make a sensible investment that works for you today, without spending money you may not necessarily get back when you sell.

2. Young Families Need Practicality More Than Perfection

We love beautiful window coverings. But we also understand what happens when you introduce young children, pets and busy family life into the equation!

Some of the most beautiful, high-end window treatments require a little more care and attention than a busy household can realistically provide.

For example, delicate sheer shades may look stunning, but they aren’t always the most practical choice throughout an entire home with young children and pets. They can be more vulnerable to damage and may require more careful handling.

For these households, we often recommend products that are durable, easy to operate, simple to clean and, ideally, easy to repair if something goes wrong.

This is where choosing the right product becomes more important than choosing the most expensive one.

Our advice? Keep the high-traffic areas practical. If you love a more luxurious look, consider introducing it in a quieter area of the home where it is less likely to be damaged.

You can always upgrade certain rooms later when life becomes a little less hectic!

3. Sometimes You’re Paying for Features You Don’t Really Need

Technology and product innovations have given homeowners some wonderful options. But not every upgrade is necessary for every household.

Motorized blinds, for example, can be incredibly convenient. We offer excellent motorization options, including Hunter Douglas PowerView, and there are certainly situations where we think they are worth the investment.

But motorization isn’t for everyone.

It adds to the overall cost, and some homeowners simply prefer the reliability and simplicity of a cordless operating system. Motorized products also require some understanding of their operation, programming and maintenance. Motors have warranties, but they are still mechanical components that can eventually need attention or replacement.

A quality cordless lift system may be a much more practical and economical choice for someone who doesn’t need automation.

The same applies to premium fabrics, specialty finishes and other upgrades. Sometimes the additional expense brings real value. Other times, the difference may be largely aesthetic.

We take the time to explain those differences so you can decide whether the upgrade is something you’ll genuinely appreciate and use.

4. You Don’t Need to Spend the Same Amount on Every Window

This is one of our favourite pieces of advice, particularly for homeowners furnishing an entire house.

Every window serves a different purpose, and there’s no reason to treat them all equally.

If you want to invest in something special, consider the areas where your window coverings will have the greatest visual impact.

Where we suggest splurging:

  • Living rooms with beautiful feature windows.
  • Dining rooms where you want to create a more elegant atmosphere.
  • Primary bedrooms where comfort and design are priorities.
  • Special architectural features or smaller decorative nooks where something unique can make a statement.

Where we suggest keeping things practical:

  • Children’s bedrooms and playrooms.
  • Recreation rooms and family spaces.
  • Patio doors and other high-traffic areas.
  • Windows where durability and easy maintenance are more important than decorative appeal.

We also love encouraging customers to have a little fun with smaller spaces. A unique fabric or different style in a special nook can add personality without committing to an expensive treatment throughout the entire house.

And if you eventually tire of it, you’re only replacing one or two window coverings rather than an entire home!

5. Less Expensive Doesn’t Mean Lower Quality

This is an important distinction.

We only work with reputable suppliers and manufacturers whose products we trust. Everything we sell is selected because we believe it offers quality, reliability and value.

Even our more economical options are products we are proud to put our name behind.

Take roller shades, for example. You don’t necessarily need the most expensive collection or premium fabric to get a beautiful, dependable roller shade. Within reason, a well-made roller shade from a reputable manufacturer can provide years of dependable service without all the additional expense.

Shutters are another excellent example. They are incredibly durable and can withstand a great deal of everyday use. And one of their biggest advantages is repairability.

If a louver happens to break, it can often be repaired right on site without replacing the entire shutter unit.

That’s the kind of long-term value worth considering when making a purchase.

Of course, no product is indestructible. All window coverings are subject to wear and tear, sunlight, misuse and occasional manufacturing issues. But choosing a quality product from a reliable supplier gives you a much better starting point.

6. The Cheapest Quote Isn’t Always the Best Deal

We understand that homeowners shop around. We would expect them to.

But one of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is that a blind is just a blind. That all window coverings are essentially the same and that the only real difference between companies is the price.

Unfortunately, that’s simply not true.

There can be significant differences in materials, construction, measuring, installation, warranties and after-sales service.

We’ve seen situations where homeowners were offered products at prices that seemed almost too good to be true. We’ve also seen the consequences when those products don’t perform as expected.

Broken shutter louvers, damaged shades and companies that are suddenly difficult to reach when something needs attention.

We’ve even encountered situations where customers were being offered products that didn’t meet Canadian safety requirements. These are things homeowners shouldn’t have to worry about when purchasing window coverings.

And here’s something else worth remembering: even the best products can occasionally fail. What matters is what happens afterwards.

Will the manufacturer honour the warranty? Will the company you purchased from help resolve the issue? Will someone actually answer the phone?

Sometimes, purchasing a less expensive product from a reputable manufacturer is a much smarter decision than buying an expensive product from a supplier you know very little about.

We also offer price matching on comparable products because we believe customers should be able to get competitive pricing without sacrificing quality or service.

7. If Your Budget Is Tight, You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once

We understand that furnishing an entire home can be expensive, especially when every window needs attention.

If you need window coverings throughout your home but have a limited budget, we’ll help you prioritize.

Living room and bedroom with light-filtering window shades beside a piggy bank and checklist: prioritize rooms, choose durable options, compare quality, get expert advice

For example, we might suggest investing a little more in the main living areas where guests spend time, while choosing attractive, functional and more economical room-darkening roller shades for secondary bedrooms.

And if you already have window coverings in place but want to upgrade to something special, there’s another option: do it in stages.

We can measure all the windows in your home during one visit, label everything accordingly and keep the measurements and product information on file.

You can then call us whenever you’re ready to order another window or two.

We’ve had many customers complete their homes this way, ordering a couple of window coverings every few months as their budget allows.

While we can offer a discount when everything is ordered together, we are also happy to work with customers who prefer to spread the investment over time.

There is no need to rush into a purchase you’re not comfortable making.

8. The Difference Isn’t Always in the Product. It’s in Who Stands Behind It.

This may be the most important thing we want homeowners to understand.

When you purchase window coverings, you’re not just purchasing a product. You’re also trusting someone to measure your windows correctly, recommend the right solutions, install everything properly and help you if something goes wrong.

At Aldo’s Shutters, our relationship with customers doesn’t end when the installation is complete.

We have spent more than 30 years building relationships with our suppliers and advocating for our customers when issues arise. We’ve gone back to manufacturers on behalf of clients, pushed for solutions and worked hard to have products replaced, even in situations where the manufacturer initially questioned the claim.

We don’t believe in selling something and then disappearing when a customer needs help.

We treat our customers the way we would want our own family to be treated.

And honestly, some of the most rewarding feedback we receive is from customers who tell us how much they appreciated our honesty during the consultation.

Sometimes they arrive convinced they want one particular product, and after discussing their lifestyle, budget and expectations, we recommend something completely different.

They appreciate knowing we took the time to explain their options rather than simply agreeing with whatever would have resulted in the biggest sale.

That’s important to us.

Our Philosophy: Spend Wisely, Not Necessarily More

After more than three decades in this business, we can tell you that there is no single window covering that is right for everyone.

Your neighbour’s perfect solution may not be the right solution for you. A product that looks beautiful in a showroom may not be practical for your family. And the most expensive option isn’t necessarily going to give you the best return on your investment.

What matters is understanding what you’re buying, why you’re buying it and whether it genuinely suits your home and lifestyle.

We want you to feel confident that you’ve explored your options, made an informed decision and spent your money wisely.

We want you to enjoy your new window coverings without looking back six months later and wondering whether you should have chosen something different.

Most importantly, we want you to know that we’re still here long after the installation is complete. If you have a question, a concern or need our help, you can call us.

That’s what more than 30 years in business has taught us.

At Aldo’s Shutters, we would rather lose a bigger sale than sell you something we don’t believe is right for you. Because to us, a happy customer is worth far more than a bigger invoice.

And that’s something we will never compromise on.
